Are Back Links Still Important for Top Search Engine Ranking?

There have been several studies showing that back links are still the most important factor for a top search engine ranking. Apparently, even back links from any website is beneficial, unless the website has been penalized by Google, the back link is advertising, or the back link was manipulated or spam. I have even seen a study showing that a footer link was helpful.

An interesting article at SEO consulting company MOZ, Can You Rank in Google Without Links? New Data Says Slim Chance, discussed MOZ’s study examining the top 50 Google search results for approximately 15,000 keywords. The article stated, “The correlation between higher rankings and the number of linking websites… …[is] actually one of the highest correlations the study found.”

Should you use Google’s disavow links tool?

I was never interested in using Google’s disavow links tool and never even looked at it.  My thought is that the disavow links tool is only for webmasters who previously paid for links.  Webmasters who were paying for links most likely had thousands of paid links which Google could determine were likely paid.  For these webmasters, the disavow links tool would be useful.

Remove My Links – The Penguins Are Coming!

The Penguins are coming!  The Penguins are coming!  The Google Penguin update may be the next Orson Welles’ 1938 invasion of the Earth by Martians or maybe penguins.

Chris Crum, part of the WebProNews team and the iEntry Network of B2B Publications, wrote about some website owners threatening other website owners with legal action if they refuse to take down links to their website.  Please read his article, “What If The Google Penguin Update Inadvertently Killed The Web As We Know It?” (Notice that I have just provided three links to another website).

Are Directory Listings Paid Links Which Will Hurt Your Google Rankings?

Paid directory listings could hurt your Google rankings if the directory is merely selling listings. However, properly edited and managed directories cost time and money to manage and it is expected that a fee will be charged for listing submissions. Such directories are not selling listings but are charging a fee for editorial review.

Text Links

How Important Are Text Links and how should the text links be used?

There has been a big business in buying and selling text links. Obviously, this is a method to trick Google into thinking that a text link was placed on a page because of its usefulness or informational value. For many years, I refused many offers to accept payment for both text links on my websites and entire pages of content with text links because this is just asking to get into SEO trouble.
